Brightness (Lumens) Explained
For a dark home theater, 1,500-2,500 ANSI lumens is sufficient. For rooms with ambient light, look for 2,500-4,000 lumens. Ultra-short throw (UST) projectors typically need 3,000+ lumens due to their design. Note that LED lumens and ANSI lumens are measured differently - ANSI lumens is the standard for comparison. Laser projectors maintain brightness longer than lamp-based models (up to 20,000-30,000 hours vs 4,000-6,000 hours).
Throw Ratio and Placement
Throw ratio = distance / image width. A throw ratio of 1.5:1 means the projector needs to be 1.5x the image width away. Short throw (0.5-1.0:1) works in small rooms. Ultra-short throw (UST, 0.2-0.4:1) sits inches from the wall - ideal for living rooms. Consider lens shift (vertical and horizontal) for flexible placement without image distortion. Keystone correction should be a last resort as it degrades image quality.
True 4K vs Pixel Shifting
True 4K projectors have a native 3840×2160 panel (usually on expensive models). Pixel-shifting 4K uses a 1080p or 2K panel that shifts rapidly to simulate 4K - visually close to true 4K for most content at a much lower price. Look for models that support HDR10 and Dolby Vision for the best dynamic range. For gaming, prioritize low input lag (under 20ms) and HDMI 2.1 for 4K@120Hz.
Sound and Smart Features
Built-in speakers on most projectors are basic - budget for a separate sound system for proper home theater audio. Smart projectors with Android TV or similar built-in let you stream without external devices. Look for multiple HDMI ports (at least 2-3) for connecting gaming consoles, streaming sticks, and AV receivers. Automatic keystone and focus correction save setup time but can be disabled for manual precision.
