Standalone vs PC VR

Standalone VR headsets (Meta Quest 3, Pico 4) have built-in processors and don't require a PC - ideal for portability and ease of use. PC VR headsets (Valve Index, HP Reverb) connect to a gaming PC for higher fidelity graphics but require a powerful GPU (RTX 3060 or better). Many standalone headsets support PC VR via Air Link or Virtual Desktop, giving you the best of both worlds. For most users, standalone is the best starting point.

Resolution and Refresh Rate

Resolution per eye matters more than total resolution. Look for at least 1832×1920 per eye (Meta Quest 3 standard) for sharp visuals. Refresh rate affects comfort: 72Hz is the minimum acceptable, 90Hz is comfortable for most users, and 120Hz reduces motion sickness for sensitive users. Comfort and Fit

VR headsets weigh 400-800g - weight distribution matters more than total weight. Look for adjustable head straps, counterweights, and prescription lens compatibility. IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustment is critical - ensure the headset supports your IPD range (typically 58-72mm). Facial interface material affects comfort during long sessions; removable and washable interfaces are preferable. If you wear glasses, check that the headset accommodates them or offers prescription lens inserts.
